Myanmar is an Asian country bordering Bangladesh and Thailand  that has been embroiled in conflict for a long time. The military has repeatedly undermined the will of the people through horrifying violence and coercion. In 2021, they overthrew the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi and greatly escalated their campaign of terror, which includes indiscriminately killing civilians. A recent UN probe reported "a dramatic increase in war crimes and crimes against humanity in the country, with widespread and systematic attacks against civilians." They are currently building case files in the event of a prosecution. This has displaced many inside the country, leaving families hungry and unable to educate themselves.

Gift of Education Myanmar

"Gift of Education (GOE) is a five-week professional training program for Burmese educators teaching English in Myanmar's tuition-free schools. The Gift of Education teacher development program addresses the need for improved teacher training by focusing on four core language-learning skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking. Over five intensive weeks, teachers participate in individual and group activities designed to help them develop strategies to teach and improve English language acquisition in their classrooms. The program provides teachers with the tools, skills and strategies necessary to assist their students in passing the English exams they need in order to graduate from high school and improve their prospects to compete in the world economy.

Due to the pandemic, GOE continued the teacher training as an Online Tutoring program on May 18, 2020. This program continued until February 12, 2021 when we were compelled to stop due to the unrest in Myanmar following the military coup. We recently launched a new Online Tutoring program on September 7, 2021 for students who are unable to attend school because of the many closures. We have employed four GOE teacher graduates as Teaching Assistants with a plan to have them assume the roles of lead teacher in the near future."
